Casino hotel rules by state

This guide groups the listed casino hotels by Australian state or territory. It records the regulator named in the facts file, the published help line, the 18+ entry rule and the houses covered by this index. Where a regulator page, self-exclusion scheme or age source was unavailable, the table says so rather than filling the gap.

How to read the state table

The table below is a jurisdiction map, not a score table. The hotel scoring sits on method and weights, with the full values in the 30-parameter table and the grouped result in scores by group. This page only answers where each house sits and which public body is named for that state or territory.

Every casino entry in this index is a physical venue. The facts file also records the national rule that Australia bans online casino play under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. This site does not provide casino play and does not imply that casino play is available online.

The entry age is 18 across all states and territories. Some state rows have stronger source wording than others. For example, Queensland and Northern Territory venue material states the age directly, while the Victorian and New South Wales rows carry medium confidence notes because the fetched regulator or venue pages did not print a plain age line. The national rule is still applied consistently across the index.

Help-line wording is quoted as published in the facts file. Most rows use the national 1800 858 858 number with state-specific branding, such as Gambler’s Help, GambleAware or Gambling Helpline. The Northern Territory row also records Amity Community Services and Darwin 8944 6565, because that wording appears in the facts file.

Houses covered by this index

The ten scored houses are not spread evenly by state. Queensland has four entries: The Star Gold Coast, The Star Brisbane, Reef Hotel Casino in Cairns and The Ville in Townsville. Tasmania has two entries, Wrest Point and Country Club Tasmania. Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales and the Northern Territory each have one scored entry.

South Australia has a casino hotel mentioned in the facts file, Eos by SkyCity / SkyCity Adelaide, but it is not one of the ten scored houses on the index. It appears in the state table because the brief asks for a state regulator view. The same approach is used for New South Wales and the Northern Territory, where The Star Sydney and Lasseters Alice Springs are noted as outside the ten.

Treasury Brisbane is not listed as an operating house. The facts file states that Treasury Brisbane closed on 25 August 2024, when gaming moved to The Star Brisbane at Queen’s Wharf. Any older list that treats Treasury Brisbane as current is not followed here.

Regulatory notes and source limits

Regulator names and licence notes are taken only from the state facts. For Victoria, the named regulator is the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission, and the facts record that Crown Melbourne Limited holds the only Victorian licence to operate the Melbourne Casino. For Western Australia, the named regulator is the Gaming and Wagering Commission of Western Australia, with a suitability note following the Perth Casino review process.

Queensland carries a time-sensitive note. The facts file says The Star Gold Coast casino licence has been suspended, with suspension deferred, since 9 December 2022, and that the Special Manager appointment was extended to 30 September 2026. It also says The Star Brisbane was issued an unconditional casino licence on 28 August 2024, subject to an External Adviser and The Star’s Remediation Plan. No later Queensland decision was found on a fetched page.

Some self-exclusion rows are incomplete or low confidence because government pages returned 403 or only snippets were available. Tasmania’s TGES row and South Australia’s barring row are therefore marked as low confidence. New South Wales has a note that the fetched NICC and GambleAware pages did not name a casino self-exclusion scheme. These gaps are treated as source gaps, not as proof that a scheme does not exist.

Dates, headcount and the parameters that matter to you. The desk checks rates and availability with the hotel or a booking partner and replies by email, usually within one working day. No payment details are taken.

The index is free to read and is funded by hotel referrals: if a reader opens a hotel's site from here and books, or asks the query desk to arrange a stay, the publisher receives a commission from the hotel or a booking partner. Scores are computed from published facts, never from commission.
